Event Details
The Rundown: Starting Local, Social, Youth, Businesses.
On June 9th, The Relay Foundation will unite with the Bay Area's best startup and youth organizations for one purpose: to start youth-led and youth-owned, pro-community businesses.
We've brought in organizations like Youth Business America, Pacific Community Ventures, and Ernst and Young. We've brought in sponsors like Nextspace, TMC Working Solutions, and Wix. In the end, the two teams Relay chooses to fund will have a hefty chunk of a $35,000 prize pool and a team of hands-on advisors that can prepare their ventures for future investment, scaling, and deep social impact.
Hands-on Entertainment: It's never felt so good to give your opinion.
But first, they Pitch! The event will include the five final teams putting out their best pitch for the team of accomplished judges, but an audience of people who could be funding them, teaching them, or sponsoring their success. And everyone is encouraged to participate. This means asking the teams questions, providing insight, and perhaps making a few introductions. Whereas most pitch events are impersonal, that goes against everything we are. Let's work together to get these companies doing great things!
A Few Perks: Food! Drinks! Impact!
Food and drink will of course be provided, with Pizza from California Pizza Kitchen in the beginning and party foods at the end. Drinks will be non-alcoholic.
Any funding raised from ticket donations will go directly to our funded teams.

Innovate:
Relay holds educational events at partner schools that equip youth with the team, the tools, and the techniques necessary to exceed expectations at our California Community Challenge. Youth learn how to build a business plan, conduct Life-Cycle Assessments for their inputs, and develop marketing, sales, and branding strategies. Partner organizations will educate students on other linked topics, such as ‘Using Technology for Social Good’, and so on.
Invest:
At our yearly California Community Challenge, Relay sources the experiences of local and global business leaders, community innovators, and serial social entrepreneurs in order to provide actionable feedback for our youths’ business plans. Local startup services also sponsor items such as office space, legal assistance, and long-term mentors. Finally, Relay chooses teams that we feel are most able to grow and invest in them so that they can begin doing great things.
Incubate:
After our Challenge, Relay executes our support plans for each funded team by bringing in community lenders, Challenge sponsors, and governmental initiatives in order to grow these youth startups into profitable, job-creating, community impacting businesses.
Impact:
With those businesses that have proven their assumptions, shown success with their business model, and have the added ability to grow their work throughout California, Relay allows a variety of exit options, chief among them will be our Youth Stock Market. This market will make it easy for communities to literally invest in the future, while at the same time provide funds for youth that are ready to make a deep, measurable impact on the communities in which they work.
Relay About Town:
When we aren’t running our Challenge or hosting on-campus events, Relay likes to work alongside likeminded organizations. Check out a few of our philanthropic escapades.
